Delve into one of your senses...
Ujjayi
“Breathe through your nose, into your throat. Your body will resist the breath at first, but soon it will come naturally.”
We had waited 20 minutes for her, this willowy, damp-haired instructor who breezed in to find us laying on our mats, the most well-behaved naptime. The nervous muscles in my legs tightened as we took to the edge of our mats. It had been awhile.
“Close your eyes. Feel the four points of contact between your foot and the earth. Find your balance inside.”
Ujjayi breathing is a close-mouthed roar. It turns your body into a horn, a shell, a tunnel of wind. Hollow and reverberant, and when your eyes are closed and your chin points to your heart, you hear your breath like that of a sleeping dragon and there is fire inside of you.
Ujjayi means ocean. The breath in your throat is a wave, breaking and drawing back and pouring forward again. Like the ocean, you build up and rush forward, you salute the sun.
